A while back Microsoft announced the demise of support for all versions of Windows 98, Windows 95 has not been supported for some time now. However, they experienced a large uproar and decided to rethink their withdrawal of support. Windows 98 then entered the “extended support” era. Basically just issuing patches for any security vulnerabilities that were discovered.
On June 30, 2006 Windows 98 will no longer be supported. This has been expected for some time and there is little hope of this date being extended. The operating system is now over 8 years old (an eternity in the software world). What you may not realize is that Windows ME support will also be discontinued. I for one will be glad to see Windows ME fade away, like a bad dream. The operating system has been plagued with problems and never really did run correctly (in this techie’s opinion).
If you have a Windows 98 or ME system, it is time to start looking at purchasing a new one. Don’t run out and buy the first system you see, there is a new version of Windows on the horizon and it is currently code named Vista. This version of Windows will require some hefty horse power in your computer so it is best to plan for the future.
