NASA World Wind arrived before Google Earth. Unlike Google Earth it does not require an active internet connection to operate. The entire program is installed on your computer for your viewing and learning pleasure. The program is not small at approximetaly 54 mb compressed. It is not recommended that you download this on a dial up (telephone) connection. While Google Earth is focused more on locations and directions. NASA World Wind is about science, it is built by a NASA Engineer after all. The information at your fingertips is incredible, view satellite, radar and shuttle imagery and Topography data. Look up elevations, volcanos and many other pieces of information. NASA World Wind is orginally built on the DotNet Framework. You will need to ensure that you have this installed for the program to run. The program is also resource intensive, so make sure that your system can handle it. The current version is build using Java.

Google Earth is a 3D globe of the earth. The globe is covered by satellite photography allow you to zoom in to locations around the globe. Some area's have a higher resolution that actually lets you see the cars on the street. You can also look up streets, address, locations or even get driving instructions and watch and fly by of the route. Be sure to set the hardware usage correctly to either DirectX or OpenGL. If set incorrectly the program will not launch, you can find the two options in the programs folder on the start menu. An active internet connection is required as the satellite imagery is streamed (downloaded as you go) to the application. |
